It’s stinkin’ cold

1 Feb

I often joke each year that “winter will be on a Tuesday this year.” Our mild winters have spoiled us, but we are about to get a dose of REAL winter weather, and I want to make sure you are really prepared.

The National Weather Service says an artic front will push temperatures into the teens and 20s for the next few days, with daytime highs expected only into the 30s.

The NWS is offering these tips to help you during this cold snap:

PIPES…TO PREVENT OUTDOOR PIPES FROM FREEZING AND BURSTING…WRAP THEM WITH INSULATION OR LAYERS OF OLD NEWSPAPER…AND ALLOW THE FAUCETS TO DRIP SLOWLY.

PLANTS…PROTECT TENDER VEGETATION BY MOVING IT INDOORS OR TO A WARMER PLACE…OR COVER IT WITH A BLANKET. BE SURE TO REMOVE THE BLANKET IMMEDIATELY AFTER SUNRISE IN THE MORNING.

PETS…PROVIDE A WARM PLACE…AS WELL AS FOOD AND WATER…FOR OUTDOOR PETS…OR BRING THEM INDOORS. BE SURE TO PROVIDE A SOURCE OF WARMTH FOR LIVESTOCK THAT MAY BE AFFECTED BY THE FREEZING TEMPERATURES.

PEOPLE…BE SURE TO DRESS IN LAYERS OF CLOTHING IF VENTURING OUTDOORS. MAKE SURE THAT THE ELDERLY OR INFIRM HAVE A WARM PLACE TO SLEEP.

HEATING…CLOSELY FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS WHEN USING KEROSENE OR SPACE HEATERS…AND BE SURE TO KEEP THESE DEVICES AWAY FROM FURNITURE…DRAPES…OR OTHER ITEMS THAT MAY EASILY CATCH FIRE IN YOUR HOME. DO NOT USE PROPANE OR CHARCOAL GRILLS OR YOUR STOVE TO HEAT YOUR HOME…AS THESE WILL CAUSE A DEADLY BUILDUP OF CARBON MONOXIDE…OR MAY CAUSE A FIRE.
